Saint Gajanan Maharaj Information

Gajanan Maharaj was a renowned Indian Saint who hailed from Shegaon (Buldhana District), Maharashtra. Birth date of Shri Gajanan Maharaj is not known, but it said that he had made his first appearance on 23 February 1878 in Shegaon.

The date (8 September 1910), when he took Samadhi, is marked as Samadhi-din by his disciples. The date of his first appearance is also marked as a propitious day. Gajanan Maharaj is believed to be a incarnation of Lord Dattatreya and Lord Ganesha.

Though there is no proper past history of Gajanan Maharaj of Shegaon, a book Shri Gajanan Maharaj Charitra Kosh – written by Shri Dasbhargav, mentions different version of Shri Gajanan Maharaj's origin.

It is said that Bankat Lal Agarwal, who was a money lender, first saw Gajanan Maharaj on February 23, 1878. Bankat saw him eating leftover wasted food which was thrown on the street. Thinking him to be a saint, Agarwal took him to his house and requested him to stay there.

Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak, who is one of the most brave and courageous freedom fighters, met Gajanan Maharaj and took his blessings. Maharaj had predicted that Tilak would a get a tough punishment from the British government. Maharaj's prediction came true.

On 8 September 1910, soul of Shree Gajanan Maharaj left for the heavenly abode. His devotees built a temple at the place where he took Samadhi. His devotees also buries the earthly remains after his demise.
