Lord Vitthala in his temple is very powerful and to a genuine Bhakta he shows his presence and blesses them. In recent times hundreds of devotees had the fortune of his Darshan. In this temple every devotee can touch the Lord’s feet and have a close Darshan. What more one needs?
There is a story behind how Lord Vitthal came to Pandharpur. In this story a vital role played by bhakt Pundalik. Lord Vitthal means another avatar of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu came to meet devotee Pundalik, but Pundalik is very busy in serving to their parents. Pundalik does realize that the god is at his door. But such was his devoutness to his parents, he wants to complete his duties and then attend the visitor.
Then, Pundalik does something strange but out of real devotion. He throws a brick outside for Lord Vishnu to stand on and wait for him until he finishes attending to his parents. It is the first day of monsoon so it is wet and muddy outside. If God stands upon a brick his feet will remain clean and dry.
Seeing this act, Lord Vishnu is extremely impressed and the ever-loving God waits for his devotee. When Pundalik comes out, he begs for pardon but far from being displeased, God is taken over by Pundalik’s love for his parents and grants a blessing. Pundalik requests Lord Vishnu to stay back on Earth and sanctify all his true devotees. He agrees to take the form of Vitthala, or God who stood upon a brick, and a temple comes up there. Along with Vitthala, Rakhumai is also worshipped here.
